the present is to us only whatever gets through our current filter?? okay. I'll accept that as an assumption. It sounds about right. And as far as I can see, yes we do constantly change who we are in some ways. that's that whole concept of I is only subjective, never an object that can be defined (remember my sociology posts a few months back?) because 'i' changes so fluidly as a result of what gets past our filter and it always comes back to other people. 'Motho ke motho ka Batho' - bantu for A person is a person because of other people.
But barring any neurological disorder or exception, I don't believe that anything of our present/past is lost. We become the me in this moment as a direct result of all preceeding moments. And often we hold onto moments or people from the past so intensely that even a person you haven't spoken to in a year helps shapes your reality.

I suppose I mean it more like this: (yes... I could only think of this more clearly after reading someone's response)
How much of what goes on around us is missed (and therefore does not enter our past technically) or what could we change to still be us but be more aware?
Something like that...
