No speeding, Canada!
Argh, I guess this move takes us even further from having an Autobahn...
Transport Canada is testing a new device for automobiles that makes speeding harder and helps build muscles all at the same time! The device "uses a global positioning satellite device installed in the car to monitor the car's speed and position. If the car begins to significantly exceed the speed limit for the road on which it's traveling the system responds by making it harder to depress the gas pedal" (CNN)
I couldn't find any information linking to this on Transport Canada's website but did find the relevant articles from The Globe and Mail stating that "While the idea appeals to some road-safety experts, even the researcher in charge of the project admits many drivers -- some of whom have shown fierce resistance to photo-radar and red-light cameras -- may balk at the science-fiction scenario of a machine forcing them to apply the brakes." A second option is being looked at called the Otto Driving Companion. For $290, the "dashboard-mounted device also uses GPS technology, but only warns drivers with a voice alarm and a light when they start to speed. "
As for what constitutes speeding? "The system can be set to go off when the vehicle is traveling anywhere from 2 to 10 per cent above the speed limit. The voice alarm can also be turned off."
