How did Hockey fans respond?
Well the stats are in.
The NHL reported that this October's average fan attendance was up 3.8% over the 2003 season average for the same month.
You can get all of the details at NHL.com
Pittsburgh's average went up by 31%. But this does make sense.
This year's rule changes and new players offer the fans in that city some semblance of hope that their team will perform this year.
I guess this answers the question we asked during the lockout. The fans did not go away, if anything they just missed the sport even more.

some people thought the fans would just go away? what are they on crack or something?? sports fans are dedicated for life... and I can only imagine how much you guys are thankful hockey is back!! I'm glad it's back too! but I'm a bit bummed.. the Wings traded my favorite player and then he retired a few weeks ago. The last three sports seasons haven't been good for me; all of my favs are retiring :(

I LOVE being able to watch the game again.. I just hope Eddie has the staying power to make this a killer year for him and the Leafs.

Never really was a hockey fan before but they've been showing Phoenix Coyotes games on FSN New Mexico and I must say I kinda dig it. Can't say if it's the rule changes or not since I didn't watch before...
Also: Not sure if it's the same in Canada but I find it hilarious that NHL here in the States is on the OUTDOOR Life cable network. That is an arena I'm looking at, right? :)

Nah, here in Toronto we watch it on good ole TSN (The Sports Network) or on Leafs TV (all non-regularly televised leafs games) DEF. not on OUTDOOR LIFE. HAHA!
And of course on Saturday on the CBC (Canadian Broadcast Company) we have Hockey Night in Canada! With my favs Don Cherry and Ron McClain (sp?)
