Brokeback Mountain: The fight

OK, so the controversy rages? I haven't heard that many people really talk about this issue but let's get it out here and now.

The controversy isn't really about the love story, as far as I can tell. The controversy came from some people (critics or the critics, critics) who have attacked why critics praise movies. That even if the movie is horribly boring they would rate it high because it deals with taboo material or deals with usually untouched material in a classy way. The other side was that those who rated this movie low say that they shouldn't have to rate a horrible movie high due to content.

*I have not seen this movie so I am only asking*

What did you think of it? What would your non-plot revealing review be?

My sister saw it, loves it and recommends it. We only got to talk for 5 minutes but what she told me is what prompted me to write this and ask you.

And I think that is a perfectly valid opinion, Eileen, and I think I see why you say that.

I have seen the movie, even though it did take some convincing for me to go see it. Being straight, and trying to be as much of an ally as possible, I must say that I was positively surprised by the end result of the film. The Awards it's getting may be a bit about the subject matter, but they are definitely not undeserved. And were it not for that one scene they have all been talking about in the media, I could almost forget that the movie addressed the story of 2 gay people. It could very well be a black man and a white woman in 1850 Alabama...

THe actors gae it their all, and it was interesting and - for me - in the same soul-searching vein as many Almodovar movies, including Bad Education... just easier to follow. Great movie, that I recommend to any moderately conservative (which I am not) males, who want to be open-minded about the issue.

As for why it's harder for male gay movies than lesbianmovies, I think Eileen is right. Furthermore, the great problem is that many straight males have the inimaginably powerful fear of ever feeling a penis entering their anus, and therefore react very defensively and violently (whether mentally or physically) against gay men. It does not justify their actions, just puts them in context, I think. Religion is just an excuse.

I saw it and liked it. It's so controversial because it's about two men who love each other and have a romantic relationship. I don't think this kind of film (gay or lesbian) will ever be sociably accepted, at least here in the US.

    my two cents.
