Anarchy, anger, death and America

(The title of this post comes from various titles found on Toronto newspapers today.)

At the Convention Centre in New Orleans there have been reports of rapes and beatings inside. People are everywhere carrying what few meager belongings they were able to save. Corpses litter the streets just outside the building. Eighty-eight police officers went inside to quell the violence and settle people down and were beat back! Some were taking shots at rescue helicopters, (which was apparently shown on TV) and according to Reuters even hospital workers were shot at.

One of our site electricians John Mackenzie was quoted as saying: "People here tend to get angry at how hard it is to get aid to some distant countries or at how people may act in these countries at times. Yet here we are looking at a popular tourist area of the United States and it is in the same shape within days. People are so quick to judge when it is so far away."

I hope that aid comes to these people immediately. I also hope that order is restored too and those who shoot at rescue personnel find a reason to fucking stop. Or that a reason finds them.

It does make me think of those end-of-world movies or zombie flicks. How quickly does society crumble no matter where you are.
And this is no movie...

As am American living outside of the US, its disturbing to hear that people from other countries think that this is the way AMERICANS are! The looters and rapists hurt all Americans, just like G. Bush has done more damage to the US than any enemy we ever had.

I understand that sentiment Mark.. the funny thing is how many times I have heard that in the last year from people.

When I was travelling overseas all I heard was how much "I HATE Americans!"

    (of course)

They hate us until they need help... who do they almost always run to first?

Those who hate don't always run to America at all. In fact after reading "America and the Age of Genocide" it becomes clearer. America's values state that they will act to protect humanity and to further rights for all yet time and time again they fail to live up to that creed. The world wants people and their countries to act that way but frequently are dissapointed so they say hate. What they may mean at times is that their dissapointment is so vast it is not calculable.

No body probably wants America to actually "lead" the world as a standard, but since in most ways America DOES lead the world the countries actions are under more intense scrutiny.

(Also, remember that when Americans travel and are memorable it is usally because they demand things from the people in the countries they visit and say "I'm an American!" as if that is supposed to impress. So, though even if a huge percent of American tourists are great, the ones who identify themselves loudly in line, in restaurants, etc are the assholes. (ie/ the ones who after 9/11 were on CNN crying about how the world was so peaceful, with no wars and why did the terrorists have to break that peace. That sort of thing pisses the world off)
